Leavenworth, the seat of Leavenworth County, is in the rolling hills of northeastern Kansas on the Missouri River. It is served by State Highways 7, 45 and 92, and US Highway 73, on the outskirts of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

In 1854, Leavenworth was founded as the very first city of Kansas, and became nationally known as the "jumping off point" for the opening of the West. Buffalo Bill Cody spent part of his youth here and later worked as a Pony Express rider and Army scout.

Public and private primary, middle and high schools in Leavenworth include the David Brewer Elementary, Howard Wilson Elementary, Anthony Elementary, Muncie Elementary, Earl M. Lawson Elementary and Nettie Hartnett/Ben Day Elementary, Richard W. Warren and Leavenworth West middle schools, Leavenworth Senior High School, and Immaculata High School.

Recreational opportunities in Leavenworth County include Lansing City Lake on the east edge of Lansing. Fort Leavenworth National Recreation Trails is immediately north of Leavenworth.
