Recreational opportunities in Leavenworth County include Lansing City Lake on the east edge of Lansing. The Leavenworth State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area includes a 160-acre lake with a diverse, high quality fishery.

The Leavenworth Wildlife Area is some 341 acres that is primarily wooded with some open grassland areas. These grassland areas are great examples of the historic native prairie that once dominated this area. Deer and turkey commonly use the wildlife area, and squirrels and rabbits are also fairly abundant. Other wildlife that may be seen at Leavenworth State Lake includes most fur-bearing species, waterfowl, amphibians, reptiles and various songbirds. Upland birds are also sometimes found in the area.

Fort Leavenworth National Recreation Trails is immediately north of Leavenworth. This 30+ mile trail system is all within the Fort Leavenworth Military Reservation, and offers one of the most unusual and interesting places to mountain bike in eastern Kansas, especially if you like history and tradition along with beautiful hills and woods.

There are 3 trail routes; all designated as National Recreation Trails that have been designed to encompass a variety of historical and natural features found on this 168-year-old base.

Utilizing paved and unpaved roads and old double-track and single-track trails, the routes provide generally easy to moderate riding through the old historic fort district, the hilly
upland areas to the west, and along the Missouri River. If you'd rather go golfing, the Oaks Golf Club in Leavenworth will fill the bill.
